Information. Education. Communication. (IEC+)
Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) is a process of working with individuals, communities, and societies to develop communication strategies to promote positive behaviors which are appropriate to their setting. IEC combines strategies, approaches, and methods that enable individuals, families, groups, organizations, and communities to play an active role in achieving, protecting and sustaining the desired behavioral change.
IEC plays a pivotal role in creating awareness, mobilizing people and making development participatory through advocacy and by transferring knowledge, skills, and techniques to the people. It is also critical for bringing about transparency in the implementation of programs at the field level and for promoting the concept of accountability and social audit. There are various techniques of communication, which include mass communication as well as interpersonal communication. There is no fixed formula and the techniques will vary from place to place, according to their specific problems.
